| Ten-year-old
Peter Augustus Duchene lived with an old, rather unbalanced soldier
who was training him to become "a soldier brave and true."
But Peter's father had been killed in the war and his mother died
years ago, the day his baby sister was born. Still, Peter had
his dreams of finding the infant...even though his guardian assured
him that she is dead. How old would his sister be now?
Desperate
to confirm that his sister was still alive, he visited a fortuneteller.
"Your sister lives," he is told.
"But
if she lives, where is she? How can I find her?" Peter asked.
The fortuneteller's
answer sounded like a joke. "You must follow the elephant."
After all, there were no elephants for thousands of miles from
his little town. "The truth is ever changing" was her
only explanation.
The truth
would indeed change that night when a magician performed the most
spectacular magic of his life. He waved his wand, and an elephant
fell through the roof of the opera house. An elephant? A real
elephant!
But, who
would tell Peter? Would he ever learn if his sister was alive
or dead? Would she be able to lead Peter to his sister?
And what
happened to the noblewoman who happened to be UNDER the elephant
when she fell? Was the magician blamed?
So began
an intriguing tale of dark despair and brightening hope, leading
from a fortuneteller to an opera house to a catherdral to a prison.
