Turtle's moonstruck mom was a housekeeper for rich people. It was1935, the middle of the Great Depression. Times were hard and jobs were scarce. So at least she HAD a job, but it wasn't easy on Turtle. The rich kids were mean. In one house, they even set Smokey's tail on fire! Her mother told the husband, and he fired her because he didn't believe her. In the next home, Mrs. Budnick said she couldn't have a kid, so Mama sent her to Key West, Florida, to live with her relatives in paradise. Mama said it would be perfect for Turtle there.
Would YOU like to be sent to a place where you've never been, away from your mama to live in a house so small you could sneeze from one end to the other? Would you like to live with a bunch of rotten boy-cousins with their mom who is worn to a frazzle and a grandmother who is meaner than a bumblebee? Would you learn to run barefooted with them into their wild and crazy fun?
Turtle in Paradise provides great character studies, comical dialogue, and accelerating action that draws the kids into a real, dangerous treasure hunt. From the beginning when all that she loves is lost to the end when the real treasure is found, Turtle will work her way into your heart and tickle your funnybone.
Turtle lives in the middle of the pop culture of the Great Depression. Shirley Temple to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to The Shadow on the radio are all woven into the story. She watches as the boys tick-tock their neighbors who have wronged them, and, she gives a really famous author advice at the local café!
